excavator.
(a) Location - Main Street and Shawsheen Street, Tewksbury, MA:
On or about 11/01/2005, an employee was struck by an excavator
counterweight when
the operator failed be to certain that no one was in the vicinity of the
swing area.
Among other means, feasible means of abatement would be to follow the
manufacturer's
operator's manual which states;
1) Ensure there are no people in the working area.
2) Prior to swinging make sure that there are neither workers nor obstacles
behind the machine.
3) Establish a signal person to direct the operator when it is safe to
swing the
excavator.
