Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees operating cranes were exposed to falling loads: a)On and before May 12, 2006, employees of Manutec, Inc., used overhead cranes which were either not supplied with a latched hook, or the latched hook was inoperable, exposing employees to falling loads. Among other methods, a feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to follow the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) B30.2-2001 Overhead and Gantry Cranes; Section 2-1.14.5 Hooks. Latch-equipped hooks shall be used unless the application makes the use of the latch impractical or unnecessary.
