Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that: a) United States Steel Corporation - Lorain, Ohio: On or about September 12, 2006 the employer failed to ensure that the replacement parts for the shackle pin retaining devices for the lifting magnet (Meade Industrial Services - serial 345) on 901 crane in the outside shipping area were at least equal to the original equipment manufacturer's specifications. The equipment manufacturer specifications indicate that cotter pins with washers were to be used to secure the shackle pins in place. Retaining devices used for the shackle pins included bent nails and pieces of wire. Abatement Note: One feasible means of abatement for this item is to ensure the retaining device for the shackle pins, are replaced with only manufacturer approved parts, as indicated in ASME B30.2-1999 - Below-The-Hook Lifting Devices - Section 20-4.3.3(a)(3) - Maintenance Procedures. No additional abatement information is required for this item.
