Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that the welder/crane employees working in the shipping/welding area with a two ton floor operated crane were exposed to the potential hazard of being struck by materials carried by the crane if the material were to be disengaged from the hoist hooks due to missing safety latches: a) Aronit Machine, LLC - Defiance, Ohio - On or about October 31, 2006, the employer did not ensure the hook for the two ton overhead chain hoist (underhung) located in the shipping/welding area was equipped with a safety latch. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to ensure that hook safety latches are installed, per ANSI B30.16-2003, Overhead Hoists (Underhung). No additional abatement information is required for this item.
