Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish
employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized
hazards that were
causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in
that employees were
exposed to struck-by and crushing hazards while working in trailer shop:
On or about February 1, 2007, and at times prior thereto, in the trailer
maintenance shop;
employees are exposed to the hazards of being struck-by and/or crushed-by
hazards while
refrigerated trailers were being parked in work bays and uncoupled from
the tractor(s).
Among other methods, feasible and acceptable means to correct this hazard
include, but are not
limited to:
Install stop logs, curbs, chocks, or other safety devices to prevent
trailers from backing into the
pedestrian aisle way, and prevent trailers for rolling backwards while
uncoupling from the
tractor; and ensure that mechanics, who operate semi and yard tractors,
are trained in the safe
operation of the tractors.
