Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of fire and/or explosion. a)Truss Shop, Dust Collection System: Employees were not protected from the hazard of fire and/or explosion resulting from the ignition of the contents of the dust collection system and subsequent flame and pressure from what would be transmitted into the plant via the path that the recirculated air takes. The system, as installed, allows air to be recirculated into the workplace and was not equipped with a spark detection and suppression system. ABATEMENT NOTE: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable means of abatement would be to comply with the guidelines outlined in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 664 - Standard for the Prevention of Fires and Explosions in Wood Processing and Woodworking Facilities (2002 Edition). Abatement certification must be submitted for this item.
