Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fall hazards. On or about 2/22/07 at Conyers, GA: Employees were exposed to fall hazards, while performing steel erection work. The employees were lowered from a 29 foot roof on the forks of a rough terrain forklift. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS: 1. Reference: ANSI Standard B56.6. The employer should prohibit operators of rough terrain forklifts from allowing employees to ride the forks. Supervisors should provide proper means for employees to ascend or descend from working levels. In accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(c), abatement certification is required for this violation (using the CERTIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION WORKSHEET).
