General-duty citation text
40.1-51.1(a) of the Code of Virginia: The employer, Aker Wade Power Technologies, did not furnish a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were operating a hoist whose wire rope had defects compromising its lifting ability. In the Assembly Area, employees use a Northern Tool electric powered wire rope hoist to lift 700 pound transformers. These employees could sustain contusions should the wire rope fail. The wire rope had two broken strands of wire. One feasible and acceptable abatement method, among others would be to ensure that all deficiencies be carefully examined and a determination made as to whether they constitute a safety hazard such as that called for by ANSI B30.16-1990, American National Standard Safety Code for Electric Powered Hoists.
