General-duty citation text
Title 40.1-51.1.(a); Code of Virginia: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that: In the Structural Building, center section, employee(s) were working with and around two unlabeled piping systems. One piping system contained water and the other compressed air (120 psi). According to ANSI A13.1-1975, Scheme for the Identification of Piping Systems, arrows shall be used to indicate direction of flow and legends shall be applied close to valves and adjacent to changes in direction, branches, and where pipes pass through walls or floors and at frequent intervals on straight pipe runs. Identification may be accomplished by stenciling, the use of tape or markers. Note: One feasible and acceptable abatement method, among others, to correct this hazard is to label the pipes in compliance with ANSI A13.1-1975.
