Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm:
The employer violated this standard on September 7, 2006, an employee
without a control
mechanism (foot pedal) was required to assist the press brake operator
while bending large
pieces of steel, exposing the employees to the hazards of unexpected
actuation of the equipment.
A feasible abatement method would be to install a control mechanism for
the second operator
while bending large pieces of steel which requires two employees.
