Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards
that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that
employees were exposed to an injection hazard while operating high
pressure cleaning
equipment:
(A)Job Site:  On October 11, 2007, and at times prior thereto, the ALKOTA
pressure washer, equipped with a Suttner ST-1500 spray gun was not equipped
with an extension wand or lance.  The pressure washer operated at
approximately 2100 pounds per square inch of water pressure at the nozzle,
thereby exposing the workers to an injection hazard.
ABATEMENT NOTE: Amongst other methods, one feasible and acceptable
abatement
method to correct this hazard is to require a lance or wand having the
trigger mechanism
located at least four feet from the discharge nozzle as required by UL
1776, High-Pressure
Cleaning Machines.  The trigger mechanism may be located less than 48
inches
from the
discharge nozzle if it can be demonstrated that a shorter length does not
present a risk of skin
injection.  .
