Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely serious physical harm to employees, in that,
employees were exposed to
the hazards of contusions, broken bones, severe lacerations/abrasions and
injury to the back and
extremities when lifting damaged trailer/truck bay doors and panels:
a/  Pepsi Piscataway NJ Site - Fleet Dept./Yard Area:
1/  Doors to Bay Trailers F18682, F28492, and F28494 were not in proper
operating
condition.  Corrected on 3/19/07.
2/  Panels to Bay Trucks F02463, F02473, F02475, F18696, and F18697 were
not in
proper operating condition.
Observed 3/14/07 and 3/19/07.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct
this hazard
is to:
1/  Instruct forklift operators not to use the forklift blades to open the
bay panels and/or
doors.
2/  Re-enforce the company policy to ensure truck drivers complete the VCR
(vehicle
condition report) when damage is observed.
3/  Create an on-site procedure or checklist that specifies damage to the
panels and/or
doors, that could result in an injury to an employee, if the damage is not
repaired.
4/  Provide training in the procedure to all potentially exposed
employees, to ensure proper
and timely reporting is done.
5/  Ensure truck/trailer bay doors/panels are repaired in a timely manner,
and/or remove
truck/trailers from service until restored to proper operating condition.
