General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fire and/or explosion hazards from improperly handled aluminum dust: In the following locations, aluminum dust was generated: A.Rod Case Fabrication Area: 1.A Production Machine buffing machine was used to polish rod cases. Aluminum dust had built-up on the floor and on surrounding storage racks and equipment. The dry type dust collector was located inside of the building. Neither the buffing machine nor the dust collection system had been provided with Class II wiring. 2.A bench mounted off-hand grinder was used to de-burr aluminum tubing after it was cut on the chop saw. Aluminum dust had built-up on the work table, floor, electrical boxes and conduit. The off-hand grinder was not Class II rated and no dust collection system had been provided. B.Manual De-Burr Area: A belt sander was used to de-burr aluminum parts. Dust had accumulated on the work table and floor. No dust collection system had been provided. C.Shipping Area: A belt sander was used to chamfer the edges of painted rod cases. Dust had accumulated on the work table and floor. No dust collection system had been provided. One feasible method and useful method to correct this hazard is to: 1.Capture all aluminum dust into a dust collection system that had been designed and installed in accordance with NFPA 65 Processing and Finishing of Aluminum. 2.Ensure that all equipment used to finish aluminum is suitable for a Class II location and that the equipment is inspected and cleaned on a regular basis to prevent any aluminum dust from accumulating on or in the equipment.
