Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of: (a) Location - Laser room: On or about 8/10/06, employees were exposed to crushing hazards while using a Budgit 1-ton under hung crane that was not inspected prior to use. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable means to correct this hazard would be: Train employees to inspect the crane each day prior to use in accordance with ANSI/ASME B-30. Among the items to inspect include: Excessive wear of chains, ropes and hoisting mechanisms, twisted or distorted links, suction cups, cracked or broken parts, condition of sheaves, operation of upper lower limit switches, and all functional operating mechanisms.
