Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that an employee was exposed to potential collapse of a silage pile 12-13 feet in height. a.) Bunker Silo - An employee was engulfed by silage while standing at the face of a silage pile, February 6, 2007. ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION AND DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is: a.) Establish restricted areas at the face of all bunker silos (i.e. fencing off the areas and posting warning signs with an appropriate message. b.) Establish and implement safe work practices regarding equipment operation, proper silage removal techniques, instructing equipment operators to remain in the front-end loaders, etc., and safe feed sampling procedures.
