What this inspection record means

OSHA opens inspections for many reasons — routine scheduling under a national or local emphasis program, an employee complaint or referral, or a follow-up after a reported injury. Opening or conducting an inspection is not itself an allegation or a finding that this employer broke any rule; any findings appear as the citations listed below, and citations can be contested, reduced, or withdrawn.

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish to each of his employees a place of employment which was free from
recognized hazards
that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that
employees were exposed to the hazard of:
a)DRILL FLOOR; On or about June 12, 2007, the employer did not ensure that
the hoist
lines (wire rope) of both air hoists were in good condition. Both lines
were not properly
wound on the hoist drums which created flat spots on the wire rope and
caused
the wire
rope to start to birdcage. This exposed employees to the hazards of being
struck by
material that was being lifted by the hoists.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard
would be to:
1) Perform regular inspections on the air hoist cables to ensure that the
cable is in good
condition and is properly lubricated and wound onto the drum of the air
hoist.
DISCLAIMERS:
1) You are not limited to the abatement methods suggested above.
2) The methods explained are general and may not be effective in all cases.
3) The employer is responsible for selecting and carrying out an
appropriate method.
