Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish to each of his employees a place of employment which was free from
recognized hazards
that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that
employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by falling drill pipe:
a)Drill Floor of Rig 204. Wire rope cables on the two (2) air hoists were
"birdcaged" and
had developed flat spots due to rough handling and not being wound on the
drums
properly; and were rusted.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard
would be to:
Perform regular inspections of the air hoist cables to ensure that the
cable is in good
condition and is properly lubricated and wound onto the drum of the air
hoist.
