Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of: a)DRILL FLOOR; On or about June 14, 2007, the employer did not ensure that the hoist lines (wire rope) of air hoist near the driller was in good condition. The wire rope was not properly wound on the hoist drum which would eventually lead to the development of flat spots on the wire rope, broken strands, deformation and birdcaging. This exposed employees to the hazards of being struck by material that was being lifted by the hoists. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard would be to: 1) Perform regular inspections on the air hoist cables to ensure that the cable is in good condition, is properly lubricated and is properly wound onto the drum of the air hoist. 2) Ensure that the air hoist guide is installed on the hoist and working properly. DISCLAIMERS: 1) You are not limited to the abatement methods suggested above. 2) The methods explained are general and may not be effective in all cases. 3) The employer is responsible for selecting and carrying out an appropriate method.
