Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to a crushing hazard:
(a) Service bay area, for employees utilizing vehicle chains, slings
and/or straps to
elevate heavy-duty and commercial vehicles during maintenance and repair
operations
and having exposure to potential struck-by/crushing hazards.
Abatement Note:  Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable means of
abatement
would be for the employer to develop and implement effective policies and
procedures
designed to ensure employees are capable of recognizing the various lift
requirements for
different vehicles and knowledgeable on the proper methods to hoist
vehicles using slings
and/or straps.  Specifically, for cab-over trucks, that either the proper
extension
attachments are installed to connect the lifting straps outside the
vehicle bumper or that
the front bumper is removed to access the strap connection areas.
