Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to each of its employees a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a struck by hazard which could inflict death or serious injury while transferring granite slabs in the shop: (a) Classic Surfaces, Inc., 507 Fruitvale Ct., Grand Junction, CO 81504: On or before 2/27/08, employees were exposed to struck by hazards while transferring granite/marble slabs in the storage yard. The granite/marble slabs are stored on "A" frames in the storage yard. When retrieving the slabs, employees are required to position themselves in the center of the slab in the danger zone, to set the hoisting clamp. This condition exposes employees to a struck by hazard with injuries including, but not limited to, broken bones and death. Abatement note: Abatement certification is required for this item (see enclosed "Sample Abatement-Certification Letter").
