Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that periodic (quarterly, semiannually, or yearly) inspections of hoists were not conducted and documented according to ASME/ANSI B30.16-1987: (a)On or about 1/24/2007, metal fabricating shop and weld shop, employees operating and working around hoists used for moving materials exposed to dropped loads due to lack of inspections that include but are not limited to checks of loose bolts, nuts or rivets, and evidence of wear, corrosion, distortion and/or deterioration of load blocks, retaining members, brake mechanism, motor, controller contact, supporting structure and connections of ropes and chains. ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION REQUIRED Feasible means of abatement include appointing a designated person knowledgable in inspecting hoists to conduct inspections according to ASME/ANSI B30.16 and maintain documentation of inspections; or hire an outside contractor to perform the inspections at scheduled intervals, at least annually, and maintain documents of inspections.
