What this inspection record means

OSHA opens inspections for many reasons — routine scheduling under a national or local emphasis program, an employee complaint or referral, or a follow-up after a reported injury. Opening or conducting an inspection is not itself an allegation or a finding that this employer broke any rule; any findings appear as the citations listed below, and citations can be contested, reduced, or withdrawn.

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards
that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that,
employees were exposed to the hazards of being crushed by unstable marble
slabs during slab
loading, unloading, storing, and transporting operations:
a) On or about October 23, 2007, the employer did not ensure that proper
slab
handling techniques were used to protect employees from crushing hazards
while
loading the stone slabs for customers. The employees are required to hold
on to the
slab which weigh approximately 600-800 pounds (by hand) while the clamp is
released from the stone slab and the employees required to secure the
slabs to the A-
frame with a synthetic strap while standing in the danger zone on the bed
of a pick-
up. The ground in the loading zone area was not level.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this
hazard is to:
a) Institute and enforce a policy in which employees are prohibited from
standing or
putting any portion of their body in the danger zone of the unsecured
slabs.
b) Design/use a loading area where the surface is level where the slabs
are loaded onto
an A-frame on a pick-up or trailer at a safe angle and make sure the slabs
would not
shift.
c) Conduct employee training on the safe handling of slabs.
Abatement Note: Abatement certification and documentation is required for
this item
(see enclosed "Sample Abatement-Certification Letter").-Certification
