Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm. Employees were exposed to the hazard of being caught by rotating parts. Employees were operating a cord connected portable pipe threading machine that was not equipped with a mandatory, momentary contact device. One feasible and acceptable method of abatement is to install a constant pressure foot switch,in accordance with American National Standards Institute. ANSI B208.1 Section 4.4. This device automatically stops the machine and the rotating pipe if the operator's foot was removed from the foot switch.
