Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards
that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees
in that
employees were exposed to the hazard of slipping and falling while walking
and working on
an ice and snow covered surface:
(a) On or about 1/21/2007, Extrusion employees were not protected from ice
and
snow slipping hazards while dismounting a forklift on the Log Yard of
Alcoa Custom
Extruded Solutions at 2500 Alumax Road, Yankton, SD.
(b) On or about 1/21/2007, Cast House employees were not protected from
ice and
snow slipping hazards while walking and working on the Log Yard of Alcoa
Custom
Extruded Solutions at 2500 Alumax Road, Yankton, SD.
Among other methods, feasible means of abatement would be to:
1.  Remove ice where employees are assigned to work.
2.  Salt and sand areas where employees are assigned to work.
3.  Require the use of foot traction devices where employees walk or work
on a
slippery or snowy surface.
