Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety & Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that employees were exposed to crushing or struck-by hazards from a wall collapse when manually raising wood framed walls. Location - 5 Bare Cove Lane, Hingham: On 09/21/07, employees were lifting a wood frame gable end wall without means to protect employees in the event the wall falls. Feasible abatement methods include but are not limited to the following: 1. Use Cranes for erecting or powered industrial trucks with manufacturers' approved attachment for erecting walls. 2. Use mechanical or manual wall jacks which prevent a wall from falling either direction. 3. Pre-plan the job to calculate the weight of the walls. 4. Conduct pre-lift meeting to discuss sequence of wall erection task.
