Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to an explosion hazard, extreme heat and fire: On or about 5/15/08, while working on 1815 Bainbridge St., Philadelphia, PA, employees and the owner of the company were exposed to an explosion, extreme heat and fire caused by inadequate ventilation of flammable vapors. The accumulation of explosive vapors (ref. MSDS Ameripolish Solvent Based Dye mixed with acetone) resulted in the serious injury of one employee who suffered second degree burns over approximately 30of his body, and another employee with minor injuries when he was thrown by the explosion. One feasible and acceptable abatement method, among others, to correct this hazard is to provide some type of mechanical ventilating equipment to keep explosive vapors below the lower explosive limit (LEL).
