Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of chemical asphyxiation from carbon monoxide accumulation due to the operation of a portable gasoline-powered welding generator inside a building: a. 1608 Walnut Street, 10th Floor - Employees operated a portable, gasoline powered welding generator inside a building. An employee, who had walked by this device, experienced symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. Feasible abatement methods may include, but are not limited to the following elements: 1. Adhere to manufacturer's hazard warnings. 2. Relocate the welding generator outdoors. 3. The engine exhaust fumes should be vented to the outside atmosphere. 4. Use direct reading instruments to monitor carbon monoxide levels or provide alarms set at 35ppm to 50ppm. 5. Educate workers about the hazards of carbon monoxide and the control of carbon monoxide exposure. ABATEMENT DOCUMENTATION IS REQUIRED FOR THIS ITEM.
