Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that; employees were exposed to the hazard of falling from the metal plate connected wood roof trusses that were subject to potential movement due to the lack of proper temporary bracing: a) Ventura at Turtle Creek, Rockledge - carport 37 - Employees were exposed to a fall of approximately 16 feet during the installation of roof trusses due to the lack of temporary bracing. The lack of the temporary bracing could cause the roof trusses to collapse. The following factors could contribute to a truss collapse: 1. Ground bracing was non-existent; 2. Top Chord Temporary Lateral Bracing was non-existent; 3. Top Chord Temporary Diagonal Bracing was non-existent; 4. Bottom Chord Temporary Lateral Bracing was non-existent; 5. Bottom Chord Temporary Diagonal Bracing was non-existent; and 6. Web Member Plane Bracing(Lateral and Diagonal/Temporary and Permanent). Among one feasible and acceptable method of abatement is to install and handle the roof trusses in accordance with Building Component Safety Information sheets provided by the Truss Plate Institute and the Wood Truss Council of America. The manufacturer provided a copy of the BCSI-B1 summary sheet when the trusses were delivered. The Standard Building code refers to the BCSI for handling, installing and bracing metal plate connected wood roof trusses.

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety & Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that; the employees were exposed to being struck by roof truss due to the improper rigging of the wood roof trusses: a) Ventura at Turtle Creek, Rockledge - car port 37 - Employees were exposed to being struck by roof trusses while the crane was hoisting and moving the trusses into position. The 42 foot roof trusses were hoisted by the use of a double chain sling. The use of double chain sling on a truss over 30 feet could cause lateral bending. While a truss is being hoisted and moved the wood truss could break thereby striking an employee. Among one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard would be to use a spreader bar or stiff back in accordance with the Truss Plate Institute and the Wood Truss Council of America booklet Building Component Safety Information BCSI 1-03 Guide to Good Practice for Handling, Installing and Bracing of Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses.
