Section 5(a)1 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to explosion hazards: The plastic pipe used to transport compressed air from the air compressor located in a storage room to equipment located in the shop area was not encased in a shatter resistant material or other appropriate means. Employees were exposed to hazards associated with the fragments from exploding PVC pipe. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS: to encase the PVC pipe in shatter resistant material as recommended in the Plastic Pipe Institute (PPI) dated January 1972 and revised December 30, 2005 recommendation B. 29 CFR 1903.19(c)(1) requires certification that the abatement of the above violation is completed.
