Section 5(a)1 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish
employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized
hazards that were
causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in
that employees were
exposed to falling loads and struck-by hazards:
Frequent and Periodic overhead hoist inspections have not been performed
by CM Brand, 1/2
ton capacity overhead electric hoist, located in the fabrication floor.
Employees are exposed to
hazards associated with falling loads.
AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE METHOD TO
CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS: To have a daily or prior to use hoist inspection
that is
recommended by ANSI B30.16-1973, Overhead Hoists, to determine that;
a)All hoist controls and operating mechanisms for improper operations,
b)All hoist safety devices for malfunctions,
c)Check deterioration of electrical components,
d)Check lifting hooks for missing safety latches, deformations, or cracks.
29 CFR 1903.19(c)(1) requires certification that the abatement of the
above violation is
completed.
