Section 5(a)1 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish
employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized
hazards that were
causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in
that employees were
exposed to falling load and struck-by hazards:
The Ehrsham brand, cage type special purpose elevator manlift used at the
grain elevator did
not have the hoistway doors safety interlock switches operating, in that,
they were completely
disconnected and allowed the manlift to operate with the doors open.
Employees exposed to
falling load and struck-by hazards.
AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE METHOD TO
CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS:
a)Have the elevator manlift door interlocks inspected and repaired by a
qualified competent person and implementing an inspection program
recommended by ASME A17.1-1996, rule 1501.
b)Train all employees/operators in the proper use and limitations of the
special
purpose manlift.
29 CFR 1903.19(d)(1) requires certification and documentation that the
abatement of the
above violation is completed.
