Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: At the facility, two single pole 20 amp circuit breakers used to provide overcurrent protection for various equipment such as but not limited to; two microwave ovens, three recessed (can) lights and seven pendant lights, were not equipped with handle ties or a master handle to disconnect all conductors of the service as required under Article 230.71(B) of the National Electric Code (NEC), 2005 edition (NFPA 70.) The microwave ovens were operated at 208 to 230/240 volts alternating current. This condition exposed employees to hazards such as but not limited to; being struck by arc flashes or exploding parts when resetting breakers, contacting energized electrical components, and/or hazards associated with fire from failure of the overcurrent devices. This condition existed on or about May 11, 2007 and times thereto. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to have an appropriately configured and rated overcurrent devices (circuit breakers) installed. Have the entire circuit assessed in terms of the equipment, wire type and gauge, and wiring methods. All assessments and work must be performed by a qualified person and should be done in accordance with any applicable State and Local regulations/codes.
