Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm in that employees were exposed to the hazard of potential fire and explosion because methods and practices were not utilized to protect air-material separators (dust collectors) from explosion and prevent propagation of fire/explosion from air-material separators (dust collectors) into areas occupied by employees: (a)Carter Day Dust Collector (Torit Products) - Air from the Carter Day dust collector was recycled through duct work back into the work area without the protection of a listed spark detection system, high speed abort gate, and/or a functioning extinguishing system, on or about January 3, 2008. ABATEMENT NOTE: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to comply with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 664, "Standard for the Prevention of Fires and Explosions in Wood Processing and Woodworking Facilities" (2007) as it applies to your operations and equipment including but not limited to the following: *Recycle exhaust air back into the building from dust collectors in accordance with Section 8.2.2.6. VERIFICATION REQUIRED
