Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck sharp pieces. PVC pipe was being used to transport compressed air at a pressure of 100 psi being transported by PVC pipes in the facility. On or about 08/17/07, in the shop area PVC pipes was used to transport compressed air into area where needed. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to replaced the PVC pipe with an impact resistant Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) pipe. This pipe is recommended by the plastic pipe institute for this purpose. In accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(c), abatement certification is required for this violation (using the CERTIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION WORKSHEET).
