Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that an employee was exposed to fall hazards, while performing work from an elevated work platform attachment: On or about 03/26/08 at Macon, GA: An employee was exposed to fall hazards, while performing steel erection work from an elevated work platform attachment, which was connected to a CATERPILLAR TH83 Telehandler. 1. The employer failed to ensure that a restraining means was utilized by an employee, who was performing steel work from the elevated work platform. No abatement certification or documentation is required for this item. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS: METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS: 1. The employer should review the Safety Standard for Rough Terrain Forklift Trucks (ANSI B56.6-1992) and CATERPILLAR TH83 Telehandler Machine Safety Manual. According to Caterpillar, employees working from an elevated work platform, attached to a TH83 Telehandler, must be protected from falls through the use of a restraining device or personal fall arrest system.
