Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to the hazard of being struck by sharp pieces:
a.1715 Lakes Parkway, Lawrenceville, GA - Employees are using compressed
air
throughout the facility to clean off equipment.  Compressed air is being
transported by PVC pipes at a pressure 140-175 psi into work areas where
needed, exposing employees to flying particles into bodies, in the event
the PVC
pipes explode, on or about 09/10/08.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard is
to replace the PVC pipes with an impact resistant
Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) pipe.
This pipe is recommended by the plastic pipe institute for this purpose:
In accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(c), abatement certification is required
for this violation
(using the CERTIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION WORKSHEET).
