Section 5(a)1 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not furnish
to each of his employees, a place of employment which was free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to: Automobile lifts that had inoperable and damaged safety
locks.
On or about 08/16/2007, the employer failed to provide a workplace that
was free from
recognized hazards in that employees were exposed to the following
hazardous equipment:
a) Lift #1 had an airline connector that was leaking which caused the
safety lock to malfunction.
b) Lift #3 was missing a swivel at the tip of the safety locking bar
requiring employees to reach
down and disengage the lock manually as the lift was being lowered.
c) Lift #4 was missing the airlines that automatically activate the lift
safety locks.  The locks
were held in the unlocked position by plastic tie wraps.
Among other methods of abatement, feasible and acceptable methods to
correct this hazard are:
a) To repair the air hoses and safety devices on lifts 1, 3, and 4.
b) To eliminate the practice of allowing employees to work under lifts
with inoperable and
defective safety locks.
PLEASE NOTE: CERTIFICATION AND DOCUMENTATION OF ABATEMENT IS
REQUIRED FOR THIS VIOLATION.
