Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: Section 5(a)(1) of Public Law 91-596, the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that employees were exposed to the conditions listed below: (a)Port-Greenbelt Shoreline Improvement Project - On or about 6/29/07, an employee was exposed to pinch and/or crushing (caught between) hazards from the jaws of the rock crushing mechanism and the conveyance system, while attempting to dislodge an obstruction from the jaws of the Metso LT105 Crusher. Among other methods, a feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard includes, but is not limited to: (1) Utilizing all safety procedures, including lockout tagout, as developed and documented by the manufacturer/distributor, to ensure all employees, such as operators performing servicing and maintenance, are required to lock out, block, bleed or use other means to remove all potential and/or residual energy prior to servicing and or maintenance. This can be accomplished by shutting down and removing keys from all ignition/energy sources; bleeding hydraulic fluid from the system; and, the placement of an energy isolating device between the jaws to prevent the unexpected release of energy during the placement of chains on the obstruction. NO ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION REQUIRED
