performing trash collection activities from and around a garbage truck

struck by the truck as it was operated in reverse; on or about 12/10/08
ABATEMENT NOTES:
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to abate this
hazard is to
enforce compliance with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)
for Mobile
Wastes and Recycles Materials Collection, Transportation, and Compaction
Equipment - Safety Requirements (ANSI) Z245.1-1999, including but not
limited
to
the following paragraphs of the standard:
6.2.3.2 f) - When a vehicle is being operated in reverse, ensuring that
the area behind the vehicle is clear;
6.2.3.2 g) - Not crossing or standing behind a vehicle operating, or about
to operate, in reverse;
6.2.3.2 h) - Making sure the locations of all co-workers are known before
operating the vehicle in reverse;
7.2.11.7 - On vehicles designed to be used with a crew or helpers, warning
signs shall be affixed to both sides of the vehicle, near the rear,
such as:
"WARNING - DO NOT CROSS OR
STAND BEHIND VEHICLE WHILE IT IS
BACKING";
7.2.14.2 - An audible warning signal device (back up alarm)
shall be provided on all motor vehicles. Alarms shall activate
when vehicle is operated in reverse ;
9.3.1.1 - Training shall be provided at least upon initial assignment to a
job or
, with periodic refresher training as necessary to maintain the required
level of
competence.
Note:  In addition to abatement certification, the employer is required to
submit
abatement documentation for this item in accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19.ce
