Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to explosion and sudden chemical release: On June 7, 2007, an employee was blown off a platform 10 feet high while adding caustic to neutralize a Hydrogen Sulfide tank. The employee was testing the pH of the tank using a rope and litmus paper when a sudden chemical reaction occurred. A feasible means of abatement would be for the employer to purchase a pH meter to read the tanks pH level. This would allow for a greater accuracy of pH levels.
