associated with forceful
exertions when pulling and staging of the milk containers, static muscle
contractions of
the dominant arm when holding and/or grasping the hook's handle as well as
awkward
posture of the back and upper extremities including some twisting of the
trunk, abducted
shoulders and extended arms while pulling and staging of the milk
Section 6(a) of the Puerto Rico Occupational Safety and Health Act: The
container stacks.
Regular exposure to a combination of forceful exertions, repetitive
motions, static muscle
contractions and awkward body postures may cause or contribute to MSDs in
the
workplace primarily including MSDs of the upper extremities concerning the
shoulder,
elbow and hand/wrist as well as musculoskeletal problems concerning the
low back area.
Among the correction methods some feasible and acceptables ones are:
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or physical harm to employees in
that employees were
exposed to:

experienced by the employee, when repeatedly lifting the most upper
container
from the 6-milk cantainer stacs, thus having the potential to reduce the
risk andprvent MSDs in the workplace.
Hazard: MSDs in the workplace primarily MSDs of the upper extremities
concerning the
shoulder and hand/wrist as well as MSDs of the back and low back pain.
leche y/o
jugo incluyendo halarlos, empujarlos, levantarlos, bajarlos y acomodarlos
almacenamiento temporal
en el area de produccion. Puesto que las tareas de trabajo especificas
asociadas a
transporte eran a ritmo

relacionados

these job-specific tasks in the work area.
Task 1 - Loading milk containers onto the chain conveyor
The employee was observed repetitively applying pulling force on multiple
stacks of 5-
milk containers using the hook with his dominant arm firmly grasping the
tool's handle
and his extended left arm holding the top milk container while moving each
stack of the
milk containers to the conveyor.
In general, the job-specific tasks are associated with forceful exertions
and repetitive
motions when sequentially pulling and/or dragging of the milk containers,
static muscle
contractions while holding and firmly grasping the hook's handle as well
as awkward
posture of the back and upper extremities including some twisting of the
truck while
walking backward, abducted shoulder and extended arm when moving the
stacks to the
chain conveyor. Regular exposure to a combination of forceful exertions,
repetitive
motions, static muscle contractions and awkward postures may cause or
contribute to the
occurrence of MSDs in the workplace primarily including MSDs of the upper
extremities
concerning the shoulder and hand/wrist as well as musculoskeletal problems
concerning
the lower back area.
Sub Tack 1 - Stacking milk containers for further loading onto the chain
conveyor.
The job specific tasks performed by the employee included making and/or
preparing
stacks of 5-milk containers by unloading the upper milk container from
stacks made of
6-milk containers temporary stored in the workplace as well as providing
help to the first
employee with moving the prepared 5-milk container stacks and then their
loading onto
the chain conveyor. It should be mentioned that the most upper milk
container in the 6milk container stack is initially positioned at about
shoulder
height of the employee.
Based on current design and layout of the workplace as well as adopted
work practices
and/or techniques, the employee was forced to raise and abduct his
shoulders and extend
both arms when reaching for milk containers positioned on top of the
6-milk container
stacks before unloading them. The employee was frequently observed using
his left arm
when lifting the milk containers from the top of the 6-milk container
stacks and then
lowering them with further placement of the first unloaded container
directly on the floor
when making and/or preparing the 5-milk container stacks, before they were
pulled to
the conveyor.
The job-specific tasks involving the process of making and/or preparing
stacks of 5-milk
containers were associated with repetitive forceful exertions when lifting
and lowering
the milk containers, awkward posture of the back and upper extremities
including
repeated bending and twisting of the truck, extended arm reaching, some
stooping as well
as work performed above shoulder height and/or below knee level.
The employee was at an increased risk of work-related MSDs primarily
including MSDs
of the back and low back pain as well as MSDs of the upper extremities
specifically
concerning the left arm and should.Furthermore, the repetitive bending and
frequent
stooping as well as work performed below knee level when making and/or
preparing the
5-milk container stacks before loading them onto the chain conveyor, might
have
contributed to knee problems experienced by the employee.
Task 2 - Unloading milk containers from the chain conveyor for temporary
storage.
The job-specific tasks performed by the employee included unloading milk
containers
from the chain conveyor for temporary storage in the production area. As
part of the
process, the employee is observed using the hook when slightly lifting the
bottom milk
container of 5-milk container stacks from the chain conveyor with further
pulling and/or
dragging of the stacks away from the conveyor and their placement for
temporary storage
in the production area. Since the job specific tasks associated with
unloading the milk
containers from the chain conveyor are self-paced the employee is
frequently observed
standing and resting his left arm on top of milk container stacks stored
in the production
area.
The job-specific tasks performed by the employee are associated with
forceful exertions
when unloading the milk containers from the chain conveyor including their
pulling
and/or dragging over the floor, static muscle contractions primarily
concerning the
dominant arm when holding and firmly grasping the hook's handle as well as
awkward
posture of the back and upper extremities including some twisting of the
trunk,
abducted
shoulders and extended arms while pulling of the stacks away from the
conveyor with
their further positioning for temporary storage in the area. Regular
exposure to a
combination of forceful exertions, repetitive motions, static muscle
contractions and
awkward body postures may cause or contribute to MSDs in the workplace
primarily
including MSDs of the upper extremities concerning the shoulder, elbow and
hand/wrist
as well as musculoskeletal problems in the low back area.Task 3 - Loading
and staging milk containers in the truck.
The employees were involved in performing two relatively different types
of job-specific
tasks when loading and staging milk containers in the truck's body. The
job-specific tasks
associated with unloading milk containers from top of 5-milk container
stacks were
performed by one employee. As part of the job, the employee was observed
making
and/or preparing stacks of 4-milk containers by repetitively lifting the
top
milk container
from stacks of 5-milk containers, placing it directly on the floor with
further lifting of
other top milk containers in a sequence and then orderly stacking them on
top of each
other thus making 4-milk container stacks. Once the 4-milk container
stacks are made,
they are pulled, arranged and staged along the wall inside the truck's
body.
The job-specific tasks are associated with highly forceful exertions and
repetitive
movements when manually lifting and/or lowering of fully loaded milk
containers as well
as awkward posture of the back and upper extremities including bending and
twisting of
the trunk, extended arm reaching, abducted shoulders, and work performed
at about
shoulder height of the employee or below knee level.
The employee is at an increased risk of MSDs primarily including MSDs of
the back and
low back pain as well as musculoskeletal problems of the upper extremities.
