concerning lower extremities of the employees. 3.The employer will install a monitor arm at each individual VDT workstation. The proposed strategy can help to improve posture of the neck/head and working comfort of the Agents when performing the job-specific VDT tasks at the Front Desk. 4.The employer will provide a wrist rest for performing typing and/or mousing Section 6(a) of the Puerto Rico Occupational Safety and Health Act: The tasks at individual VDT workstations. The proposed strategy can help to improve posture of the distal upper extremities and working comfort of the employees when performing the job-specific VDT tasks at the Front Desk. 5.The employer will provide vertical adjustability concerning the keyboard platforms currently installed at individual VDT workstations. As the general rule, both input devices should be positioned close to each other and at about elbow employer did not height of VDT operator so that an angle between the upper arm and lower arm furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: Seccion 6(a) de la Ley de Seguridad y Salud en el Trabajo de Puerto Rico: El patrono no proveyo empleo y un sitio de empleo libre de riesgos reconocidos que esten does not exceed 900-1000 thus enabling the VDT operator to obtain proper posture of the upper extremities when performing computer-related tasks. 6.The employer will provide a telephone-shoulder rest to the Agents. The proposed strategy can help to improve posture of the neck-shoulder of the Agents when frequent use of the telephone during the day as well as reduce contact stress caused as the result of cradling of the telephone between the employee's causando o que ear and shoulder. 7.The employer will provide a standing support to the Agents regularly involved in performing the job-specific tasks at the Front Desk that require prolonged standing on the hard floors. The proposed strategy can help to improve working comfort and reduce musculo skeletal fatigue and pain primarily concerning the lower extremities and lower back area of the Agents when performing the puedan causar muerte o dano fisico a los empleados, por cuanto empleados job- specific front desk tasks requiring prolonged standing on the hard floors. estaban expuestos a: At the front desk of the Condado Plaza Hotel and Casino, the employees in the Front Desk performed their tasks standing all day. They performed specific job-tasks such as intense public contact, costumer service, cash handling, prepairing and explaining related Hazard: MSD's in the workplace primarly MSD's of the upper extremeties concerning the shoulder, neck and hand/wrist as well as MSD's of the back and low back pain. The employees were exposed to ergonomic risk factors that contributed to an increased risk of Musculo Skeletal Disorders (MSD's) when performing these job-specific tasks in the work area: 1) Registration Process The Agents were observed adopting awkward posture of the back and upper MSDs en el lugar de trabajo. Furthermore, as part of the guest registration process the Agents experienced exposure to repetitive lateral bending and twisting of the trunk when accessing printed documents as well 4.El patrono proporcionara un descanso de muneca para realizar tareas de mecanografia y/o 'mousing' en estaciones individuales de trabajo VDT. Furthermore, the magnitude of exposure to trunk bending and/or twisting was especially high, when the required items, documents and/or forms were taken from the lowest shelves. Taking into consideration the repetitive nature of job-specific tasks and activities performed at the Front Desk and the number of guests served during the day, the regular exposure of the Agents to awkward postures of the back and upper extremities primarily including repetitive forward and lateral bending and/or twisting of the trunk and extended reaching may cause or contribute to an increased risk of musculoskeletal injuries and disorders in the workplace primarily including MSDs of the back and low back pain. 2) Computer related tasks (VDT tasks) Agents were regularly involved in performing computer-related tasks (here and thereafter VDT tasks) at their individual workstations during the day including repetitive use of the keyboard and mouse. It should be mentioned that the VDT tasks were always performed by the Agents in a standing posture. Due to the current design and layout of the computer workstation (here and thereafter VDT workstation) primarily including the position of both input devices the keyboard and the mouse as well as placement of the monitor, theAgents were observed adopting awkward posture of the neck and distal upper extremities including forward neck bending and extreme wrists/hand extension when performing the job-specific VDT tasks. Awkward posture was adopted and maintained during certain periods of time. Moreover, in addition to awkward posture of the wrists/hands when performing typing tasks, the wrists/hands of the Agents were exposed to hard surface and sharp edge of the retractable keyboard platform. Based on the design and layout of the individual VDT workstations, the Agents were regularly exposed to awkward posture of the neck and upper extremities as well as contact stress primarily concerning distal upper extremities when performing the job- specific VDT tasks. The regular long-term exposure to the identified ergonomics risk factors may cause or contribute to an increased risk of MSDs of the neck and/or cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) primarily with respect to the distal upper extremities of the employees. Moreover, based on the design of the individual VDT workstations, it appeared that the adjustability of the keyboard platforms was not sufficient to achieve proper posture of the upper extremities concerning the Agents performing the job-specific VDT tasks at their workstations. Furthermore, due to low placement of the monitor and its tilt, the Agents were forced to bend the neck/head forward in order to clearly see images and/or information displayed on the screen. Awkward posture was repeatedly adopted and maintained during certain periods of time. Cumulative exposure to the awkward posture may cause or contribute to an increased risk of MSDs with respect to the neck/upper back area of the employees. 3) Using the telephone As part of the job the employees were frequently using the telephone during the day when responding to various inquiries and/or requests as well as providing relevant information as required. When using the telephone the Agents were observed habitually cradling the receiver between the ear and shoulder resulting in awkward body postures including lateral bending of the neck and raised shoulder as well as experiencing contact stress imposed on musculoskeletal structures of neck and/or shoulder areas. Awkward posture of the neck and shoulder was repeatedly adopted and maintained during the day that may also be indicative of general lack of ergonomics awareness among the employees. Cumulative exposure to awkward posture of the neck and/or shoulder as well as contact stress experienced by the Agents when using the telephone may cause or contribute to an increased risk of MSDs in the neck/shoulder area. 4) Standing posture The job-specific tasks and activities at the Front Desk were performed by the Agents exclusively in a standing posture maintained for extended periods of time. The floor around the Front Desk features ceramic tiles laid out on top of concrete background thus creating smooth and even hard floor surface. In general, the prolonged standing is considered as spending over 50of the time during a full work shift in standing position. Taking into consideration the physical environment at the Front Desk including regular exposure to prolonged standing and/or walking on the hard floors, the Agents may experience an increased risk of work-related MSDs primarily including MSDs ofthe back and low back pain as well as musculoskeletal problems in the lower extremities. Among the correction methods, some feasible and acceptable are: A.General Recommendations 1.The employer will provide ergonomics awareness training to the Hotel's Agents and other employees teaching them basic ergonomics principles, ergonomics hazard recognition, problem solving, proper work methods, practices, and techniques, as well as recognition of early signs and symptoms of MSDs, importance of their early reporting and use of personal protective equipment on the job if needed or required. 2.The employer will develop a mechanism for early reporting the signs and symptoms of MSDs and make the Hotel's employees aware about the mechanism and the importance of early recognition and reporting the signs and symptoms of work-related MSDs. 3.The employer will assign a person to carry-out an ergonomics program in the Hotel. The program should be focused on the reduction of risk and prevention of MSDs in the workplace. B.Specific Recommendations 1.The employer will provide cushioning mats at each individual VDT workstation. The proposed strategy can help to reduce musculoskeletal discomfort, fatigue and pain associated with prolonged standing on the hard floor concerning lower extremities as well as lower back of the Agents, thus having the potential to reduce the risk and prevent MSDs in the workplace. 2.The employer will provide insoles to the Agents spending most of the time in a standing position on the hard floor while performing the job-specific front desk tasks. The proposed strategy can help to reduce musculo skeletal discomfort, fatigue and pain associated with prolonged standing at the Front Desk primarily
