Health Act of North
Carolina:  The employer did not furnish to each of his employees
conditions of employment and
a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were
causing or likely to
cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were
exposed to being
caught between and/or underneath a powered industrial truck:
a)facility -  employees routinely (daily) performed service and
maintenance on a
fleet of forklifts, which were a part of the sales, rental and repair of
the
equipment.  Employees were using old wood blocks and tire rims to support
the
equipment while working underneath the equipment.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement to correct this
hazard is to use standard forklift jacks (air/hydraulic), which are
recognized in
the industry, as a safe means to allow access underneath the forklifts
during
repair, service and maintenance activities.
