Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the fire and explosion hazards of sodium chlorite: a) Processing, Station 7 -- the employer failed to control the recognized hazardous characteristics in the sodium chlorite formulation (NFPA Oxidizer Classification 3), which resulted in a fire, on or about 12/19/07. Among other methods, one feasible and accepted method to correct this hazard is to keep all containers of sodium chlorite tightly closed, ensure there is no possibility of contamination with combustible materials or any foreign matter, and eliminate or mitigate any source of ignition, including friction, physical impact, or static electricity. Abatement certification required within 10 days after abatement date. The certification shall include a statement that abatement is complete, the date and method of abatement, and state that employees and their representatives were informed of this abatement.
