Section 6(a) of the Puerto Rico Occupational Safety and Health Act:  The
employer did not
furnished employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or physical harm to employees in
that employees were
exposed to:
Seccion 6(a) de la Ley de Seguridad y Salud en el Trabajo de Puerto Rico:
El patrono no
proveyo empleo y un sitio de empleo libre de riesgos reconocidos que esten
causando o que
puedan causar muerte o dano fisico a los empleados, por cuanto empleados
estaban expuestos
a:
a) Workplace ("Planta de Alcantarillado Villa Taina") - employees
performed routine
tasks during a full day shift as plant operator, helpers and others. One
of the tasks was
handling of chlorine for sewage water treatment system. The emergency
shower, located
next to the chlorine cylinder room, was not activated weekly to flush the
line and to
verify proper operation. Also the eye wash unit was not functioning.
Operator may be
expose to corrosive skin and eye contact. One feasible and abatement
method among
others to correct the hazard is:
1. Reference: ANSI Z358.1-1990 Emergency Eyewash and Shower Equipment.
a) Repair or purchase an eye wash unit.
b) Emergency Shower and Eye wash unit shall be activated weekly to flush
the line and
verify proper operation.
a) Lugar de Trabajo ("Planta de Alcantarillado Villa Taina") - empleados
realizaban
tareas de rutina durante su jornada de trabajo como operadores de planta,
ayudantes y
otros.  Una de las tareas era el manejo de cloro para el sistema de
tratamiento de aguas
servidas. La ducha de emergencia, localizada proxima al cuarto de
cilindros de cloro, no
fue activada semanalmente para drenar la linea y verificar que estaba
operando
correctamente.
Ademas la estacion de lavado de ojos no estaba funcionando. Empleados
expuestos
a
contacto piel y ojos con cloro. Un metodo para corregir estos riesgos son:
1.Referencia: "ANSI Z358.1-1990 Emergency Eyewash and Shower Equipment".
a) Reparar o comprar una estacion de lavado de ojos.
b) Ducha de emergencia y estacion de lavado de ojos debe ser activada
semanalmente
para drenar la linea y verificar que esta operando correctamente.
