Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to crushing and struck-by hazards:
(a) Automotive Shop - The employer failed to maintain the automotive lift
in a safe operating
condition and establish procedures to periodically inspect the lifts in
the service area in
accordance with the manufacturer's instruction or ANSI/ALI ALOIM-2000,
American National
Standards for Automotive Lifts-Safety Requirements for Operation,
Inspection and Maintenance.
The VBM automotive lift had broken safety latches.  Employee(s) working
under elevated
vehicles were exposed to crushing and struck-by hazards in the event the
vehicles would
collapsed from its elevated position.
Among other methods, one feasible method to correct this hazard is to
include,
but not
limited to the following:
(1) Conform to the American National Standards Institute/Automotive Lift
Institute (ALI) safety
requirements for operation, inspection and maintenance, ANSI/ALI
ALOM-2000, Sections 4,
5, and 6.
In accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(c), abatement certification is required
for this violation
(using the CERTIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION WORKSHEET).
