Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which is free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed struck by, slip, trip and fall hazards created by falling bulk mail containers: (a)At the Low Cost Universal Sorter legs, G1-G4: overloading of the legs caused bulk mail containers to fall from the legs. Employees were struck by bulk mail containers causing contusions, sprains and strain injuries. Bulk mail containers fell into the work aisle and exposed employees to the slip and trip hazards. Feasible and acceptable means of abatement to correct these hazards are to 1) place limit switches in series with the sensors to activate the sensors remotely at the north unloading end of the conveyor legs and 2) to follow the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, ASME B20.1-2009, Safety Standard for Conveyors and Related Equipment, Sections 5.11 Controls, 5.12 Operation, 5.13 Transfer, Loading, and Discharge Points. Abatement verification is required for this violation. The abatement certification sheet is enclosed with the citation(s).n
