Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were likely to cause death or serious physical harm in that, the employer did not conduct a periodic inspection of its 20 ton Clevland model crane: a. Cauffiel Technologies Corporation, 1303 Campbell Street, Toledo, Ohio: On or about October 6, 2009, the employer did not ensure that the Cleveland 20 ton capacity overhead crane used daily to weekly for hoisting machines and components that can weigh up to 30,000 pounds was inspected on a periodic basis to maintain it in a safe working condition. Employees are potentially exposed to the hazard of dropped loads due to failed crane components. Abatement Note: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to comply with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) B 30.2, Overhead and Gantry Cranes (Top Running Bridge), Chapter 2-2 Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance. In accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(d), abatement certification is required for this violation ( using the CERTIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION WORKSHEET), and in addition, documentation demonstrating that abatement is complete must be included with your certification. This documentation may include, but is not limited to, evidence of the purchase or repair of the equipment, photographic or video evidence, or written records.
