Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to caught in and/or struck by hazards: a.Sulzer Metco Coating, Spraying Booths #1, 2, and 3: Personnel were not protected from the hazard of being struck by the moving robotic arms in the robotic spraying booths, as determined on or about 03/05/09. ABATEMENT NOTE: One feasible and acceptable means to abate this hazard is safeguarding personnel from hazards of the work envelope of the three spray booths in the shop area by presence-sensing devices, permanent barrier, interlocked barrier, or perimeter guarding per Section 6.2 of ANSI/RIA R15.06-1986.

ABATEMENT NOTE: One feasible and acceptable means to abate this hazard is to locate the main control panel in sight of the robot per Section A-5 of OSHA INSTRUCTION PUB 8-1.3 SEP, 1987, OFFICE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY ASSESSMENT GUIDELINES FOR ROBOTIC SAFETY.

ABATEMENT NOTE: One feasible and acceptable means this hazard is to install a readily accessible, unobstructed emergency stop device inside the spray booth, per Section 6 of ANSI/RIA R15.06-1986.
