Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fall hazards: a)Establishment: Elevator mechanics who are required to perform inspection and maintenance operations while standing on tops of elevator cars are exposed to falls of up to 6 stories into adjacent hoistways. Abatement Note Among others, one feasible and useful method to eliminate or to materially reduce this hazard would be to follow the 2005 Safety Handbook published by Elevator World, Inc, Section 8.1.1.2(k) and use fall protection when a fall hazard exits as detailed in Section 4. On or about 2/28/08. NOTE: THE EMPLOYER IS REQUIRED TO SUBMIT CERTIFICATION OF ABATEMENT FOR THIS ITEM. FAILURE TO COMPLY MAY RESULT IN AN ADDITIONAL PENALTY OF $1,000 AS PER 29 CFR 1903.19.
